Busted NYPD sergeant fed terror list to help ma win fight over kids, cops say

An NYPD sergeant was busted Thursday for trying to help a woman win her custody battle by getting her a classified document showing that the father of her kids is on a terrorist watch list, sources said.

Haytham Khalil, 34, faces a year in prison for accessing a national crime database without authorization.

The eight-year veteran from Brooklyn was released on a $20,000 bond after an afternoon appearance in Manhattan Federal Court.

Prosecutors say Khalil was tripped up after the unidentified woman gave her lawyer a copy of the watch list accessed from National Crime Information Centercomputers.

The lawyer turned the document over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police inOttawa, who with the help of the NYPD traced it to an NYPD computer and, eventually, Khalil.

A source says Khalil and the woman are not romantically involved.

The probe revealed that Khalil regularly had an officer in the Patrol BoroughManhattan South investigations unit conduct searches for him on the NYPD computer, authorities said.

When the officer left the unit in September 2007, Khalil called him to ask for his password to the NCIC system, they said.

Prosecutors believe Khalil accessed the system using the password on Dec. 6, 2007.

The officer who helped Khalil gain access to the system was disciplined for failing to safeguard his code, a source said.

Aside from criminal records, the computer includes data from the FBI's terrorist screening center.

Khalil, most recently assigned to Manhattan's 1st Precinct, has been suspended without pay.

The Manhattan investigations unit, where he was previously assigned, handles internal administrative cases involving allegations against NYPD personnel.
